Doing it for the Kids

At the heart of our practice, we support children by providing a stimulating, encouraging and nurturing environment that is both inclusive and recognises diversity. We provide children with a safe, homely environment that generates confidence and encourages them to feel empowered .

Many children find it easier to express their emotions and explore experiences through artistic forms and play, rather than through words. At Berry Collective Psychology our clinicians incorporate art and play into their work with children. When we use play during sessions, we are communicating with the child through their own language.

Art therapy is used with children and adolescents. It has been shown to improve cognitive and sensory-motor functions, foster self-esteem, assist in emotional processing and emotional regulation, cultivate resilience, enhance social skills, and reduce distress.

By engaging in art and play therapy, children can learn healthy coping mechanisms and develop greater self-awareness. We are fortunate to have a trained Art Therapist in our team, who has many years of experience as a mental health practitioner.

Eye-Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR)

EMDR therapy is an extensively-researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences. When distress from a disturbing event remains, the upsetting images, thoughts, and emotions may create an overwhelming feeling of being back in that moment, or of being “frozen in time.” EMDR therapy helps the brain process these memories, and allows normal healing to resume. The experience is still remembered, but the fight, flight, or freeze response from the original event is resolved.

During treatment, after an initial period of planning with your therapist, you will be asked to hold different aspects of the distressing event or thought in mind and to use your eyes to track their hand as it moves back and forth. As this happens, for reasons believed by a Harvard researcher to be connected with the biological mechanisms involved in Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, internal associations arise and you will begin to reprocess the memory and disturbing feelings. In successful EMDR therapy, the meaning of painful events is transformed on an emotional level.

As part of therapy, EMDR can help people of all ages address a wide range of challenges, including anxiety, chronic illness, mood disorders, dissociation, eating disorders, grief and loss, personality disorders, trauma, sleep disturbance, and substance abuse.
